Finding the story in the science

Every important idea deserves to be understood. The best science writing doesn't oversimplify complexity to make it palatable — it honours its intricacy and lets a reader feel why the work mattered enough to pursue. More than that, it reawakens a reader’s sense of wonder at how extraordinary the natural world and scientific discovery can be, reminding us what we stand to lose and what’s worth protecting. Helping that happen, at any scale, is what I care about most.

I offer comprehensive developmental, structural and stylistic editing services. I aim to ensure your work is rigorously structured and beautifully written. I focus on both the big-picture architecture of your work and the craft of individual sentences. I shape the argument’s structure, logic and narrative flow, then strengthen your voice and clarity at every level, ensuring the ideas land exactly as you intend them.

I’m also trained in plain language — the discipline of stripping away jargon and unnecessary complexity to produce writing that speaks directly to your intended audience, while preserving all rigour and substance. This skillset complements every layer of my editorial work, ensuring your ideas don’t just survive clarity, they shine through it.

About the Editor

What moves me is the moment a difficult idea comes into focus — when writing takes something intricate and makes a reader’s understanding arrive as awe. I'm especially drawn to science that reawakens a sense of wonder and curiosity about the natural world. My instinct as an editor is always to find the story already present in the science, and help it reach the reader with the author’s voice and its intellectual rigour fully intact.

That instinct was built over nearly seven years inside the federal government, translating some of the most technical, scientific and high-stakes material into clear, compelling writing — including years of cabinet-level policy writing for senior decision-makers, and developing guidance products on highly technical topics for wide-ranging public audiences. It taught me how to hold onto precision while making dense, difficult material genuinely readable under real deadline pressure, and how much is at stake when clarity fails.

I am a member of Editors Canada. I am completing professional Editing and Plain Language certificates at Simon Fraser University. I also hold an Honours Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Western University and a Master of Infrastructure Protection and International Security from Carleton University.

I’m based in Vancouver, BC on the unceded traditional territories of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.

My Editing Philosophy

I believe clarity and complexity aren’t opposites; they’re partners. The best science writing doesn’t thin out difficult ideas to make them digestible, it honours their full intricacy and still allows the reader to feel why the work matters. That’s the craft I’m passionate about.

I come to editing with a simple conviction: the story is already there. It lives in the research, in the logic of the argument, in the questions that drive the work. My job isn’t to impose a narrative or reshape your ideas into something more “readable”. It’s to find the architecture that’s already there and shape the prose around it so your voice reaches the reader intact.

I believe in precision, not as a tool to complicate, but as a form of respect. The exact word, the honest phrase, the sentence structure, so it cannot be misread. These aren’t flourishes; they’re how we honour both the science and the reader’s time.

I also believe wonder is legitimate work. Science has the power to reawaken readers to the strangeness and aliveness of the world we live in. Helping that happen—making readers not just understand, but care—isn’t separate from editing. It’s central to it.

Finally, this work is a partnership. You’re the expert on your research and your vision. I’m here to strengthen both, in confidence, so that what you’ve spent years building reaches the readers who need to hear it.
